The TMA varsity girls tennis team delivered an impressive performance on Day 1 of the FHSAA Class 1A District Championships and remains in strong contention for a regional berth.
Clara Barnhart (No. 3 singles) and
Anelye Camacho (No. 4 singles) each secured both quarterfinal and semifinal victories to advance to their respective championship matches.
Barnhart, the No. 2 seed with a perfect 12-0 regular season record, defeated Jessica Pan (Trinity Prep) 6-3, 6-2, followed by a 6-3, 6-0 win over Sarah Mu (Lake Mary Prep). She will face Astrid Feeny (Geneva) in the finals.
An. Camacho, also undefeated at 12-0 and seeded No. 2, opened with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Laila Samra (Father Lopez), then battled past Hannah Webb (Circle Christian) in a three-set match, 6-1, 4-6, 10-3. She advances to face Leah Schmidt (Geneva) in the championship.
TMA's No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams both advanced to the semifinals. The No. 1 team of
Amarelye Camacho and
Brie Gonzalez defeated Father Lopez 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) and will take on Geneva. The No. 2 team of Barnhart and
Lexie Adams won a three-set thriller, 6-1, 3-6, 10-7, to advance to a matchup with Circle Christian.
In singles play, Gonzalez reached the No. 2 semifinal with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 victory over Amelia Frye (Orangewood), before falling in a tightly contested match to top-seeded Olga Rekk (Lake Mary Prep), 6-1, 2-6, 10-8.
Adams earned a quarterfinal win in the No. 4 singles draw, defeating Abigail Towe (Circle Christian) 6-3, 7-5, but later dropped a hard-fought semifinal to Scout Ramie (Trinity Prep), 7-5, 7-6 (10-7).
In No. 1 singles, Am. Camacho competed well against Giselle Johnson (Lake Mary Prep) in the quarterfinals but fell 6-0, 6-2.
TMA heads into the final day of districts alongside Geneva and Circle Christian, with a strong opportunity to secure a spot in the regional tournament.
On the boys side, the TMA No. 2 doubles boys team of Neil Menon and Max Gentile advanced to Day 2 of the FHSAA Class 1A District 5 Tennis Championships with a thrilling comeback victory over Orangewood, 3-6, 6-3, (13-11). They will next face the No. 1-seeded team from Trinity Prep.
In No. 2 singles, Menon earned a hard-fought win over Matthew Cando (Lake Mary Prep), 6-2, 3-6, (10-7), before falling to top-seeded Nathan Lu (Trinity Prep) in the semifinals, 6-0, 6-0.
At No. 3 singles, Sebastian Keiner opened with a strong 7-6 (10-7), 6-1 victory over Luke Scharf (Orangewood), but was defeated in the semifinals by No. 1 seed William Orosz (Trinity Prep), 6-1, 6-0.
In other singles action, Gavin Darnell (No. 1), Nico Hayes (No. 4), and Gentile (No. 5) each fell in their respective quarterfinal matches. Hayes lost to Logan Zimmer (Orangewood), while Gentile was defeated by Roe Robbins (Geneva), 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles play, the No. 1 team of Darnell and Keiner was also eliminated in the quarterfinals, falling to Circle Christian, 6-2, 6-0.
