TMA Advances to District Championship
The Master's Academy (11-14) travelled to Daytona Beach on Tuesday to play Father Lopez in the opening round of the district tournament.
The strong regular season schedule that TMA played paid dividends as the Eagles defeated Father Lopez, 3-0 (25-19, 26-24, and 26-24). TMA played a nearly flawless match with minimal errors. "I thought our consistent play throughout the match was the key in winning tonight," said Coach Quynh Nguyen.
Sarah Smith's five kills early in the contest set the tone for the Eagles as they won the first set by a final score of 25-19. The next two sets were evenly played. Neither team led by more than three points. Catherine DeWitt ended the second set with a kill that was partially blocked; but the ball fell to the floor on the Green Wave side of the net, thereby giving TMA the second set win, 26-24.
With TMA leading the match, 2-0, flashbacks of last year's district playoff game were in the minds of Eagles' fans when the Green Wave came back to win three-in-a-row to knock the Eagles from advancing. This would not be a repeat performance as TMA secured the third set, 26-24. On the final point, Pizarro's quick return of the ball to the back corner landed in bounds and the Eagles punched their ticket to the district championship game.
Jordyn Macbeth led TMA with 9 kills, followed by Smith's 7 kills. Pizarro had another double-double with 22 assists and 11 digs.
Prior to the match, Danielle Tatro was recognized for being selected to the first team all-conference; Jenna Johnson made the second team all-conference; Jordyn Macbeth received honorable mention.
The Master's Academy will play Warner Christian on Thursday, October 27th in the district championship game. Warner Christian defeated Lake Mary Prep, 3-0, to advance to the championship game. First serve is at 7PM.
